The Seekers by Codi Bean

Alondra Ave’na is a Seeker, a vampire hunter for an organization called The Campaign. Alondra stands out among the other Seekers because she is a Dampeal—a Black American, half vampire, half human hybrid that occurs only every few hundred years. This day starts off like any other, explaining her world and how it works. Her vampire lover Sinjin, meets her after a hunt to deliver a message. The Board needs a word with her alone. The Board is the vampire’s governing system and in order for them to talk to her kind, they must request permission from the Campaignand they didn’t. Sinjin tells her a vampire has awakened the fallen angel Azaziel and his seven captains. On top of everything else, Azaziel decides to pay Alondra a visit to let her know he has truly arrived. First, she must find the vampire who awakened Azaziel and kill him before he rouses the rest of Azaziel’s army. Then she must discover how to send Azaziel and his captains back to the darkness.

Excerpts:

The Seekers

They say it’s an erogenous zone. That spot where your neck and shoulder meet. The Egyptians believed the finger you place your wedding ring on has a vein going straight to your heart. It’s the same concept. In “that spot” is a vein that goes straight to your other erogenous zones. The human need to flirt with death and the unknown seems to be connected to the need for pleasure. Vampires are masters at exploiting this concept; as a matter of fact, they count on it and the thrill connected to that little place on that particular erogenous zone. That’s right, I said vampire. The undead walk among us.  Next door―your doctor, your kid’s teacher―could be anyone.
The Transylvanians had it right, and in the beginning, vampires fed mostly on peasants. Once the peasants realized what was going on, they learned how to kill vampires with curses gleaned from ancient legends and stories. The vampires then began to feed on the aristocrats, especially the women. You see, vampires have a hell of a sex drive. It’s one of the few things I like about them.
Don’t get me wrong, not all vampires are bad. Some choose to use other methods to feed their hunger, but enough of them are bad that I get to keep my job. Forgive me, I’m getting off track. Where was I?
So the vampires began using the aristocracy as a buffet table and the aristocracy retaliated. A war broke out between humans and vampires. It was ugly and bloody, and many innocent people on both sides lost their lives. Years later a truce was called and a compromise was reached. Some vamps said cool, others refused, and soon after The Campaign was formed. The Campaign―a secret organization that keeps track of and monitors vampires and their behavior. I’m their dirty little secret. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Alondra Ave’na, and I’m a Seeker.
